Are your wrists sore?

September has already so quickly come and gone, a reminder to be slow and present. With the change of season, the colourful leaves remind us that it is ok to let go. September is a time of renewal, and getting back to healthy routines.
This month, let's explore the foundation of the wrists in yoga. So many students struggle with their wrists, forearms, shoulders, especially while weight bearing on hands and knees, planks, and downward dog.
Here are a few tips and tricks that may help you build the mobility and strength that you need to hold plank positions more comfortably.
-Mobilize your wrists before your yoga practice or exercise routine - circling them, weight bearing with movement forwards and backwards, and side to side.
-Try folding up the edge of your yoga mat, or using a towel or blanket to cushion the palm of the hands towards the back of the wrists, allowing the fingers to go the floor. Changing the angle of the wrist will ease the pressure.
-Play with hand and wrist alignment, try turning your arms and hands outward, to lessen the load on the wrists.
-If your wrists are sore, notice if your shoulders are doing some compensatory movements!
-Do some wrist and forearm strengthening exercises weekly.
If you struggle with your wrists, here is the link to a 20 minute therapeutic video in my library that may help you get stronger and decrease discomfort in wrists, forearms, and shoulders.
