If you are suffering with sciatica, or you know someone that is, please reach out. Yoga can help. I can give you a set of targeted exercises and stretches to help relieve the discomfort. Yoga privates are a great way to work on your own specific needs, particularly if you have injuries or chronic pain.

Sciatica refers to a pain or tingling that travels through the sciatic nerve, from the buttocks down the legs.

The most common cause is a herniated disc or growth that puts pressure on the area of the lumbar spine nerve roots. It can cause inflammation, numbing, weakness, and pain in the affected leg. Other causes can include degenerative discs in the lower back, spinal stenosis, muscle spasms, or sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

The most effective ways to treat sciatica include, you guessed it, more movement!

-Strengthen your deep core.

-Strengthen your spine, specifically the muscles in and around the lower back. For example, modified cobra and other gentle backbends.

-Strengthen your glutes and hips.

-Stretching for the hips and hamstrings, such as reclined hamstring stretch using a strap, or legs up the wall with a figure 4 stretch.

-Knees to chest, both at the same time so that there is no twist or imbalance in the pelvis.
